LASER TECHNIQUES AND INDICATIONS

At the I. UMBERT INSTITUTE of DERMATOLOGY we use different laser platforms and pulsed light platforms to treat different pathologies; we use CO2 laser, UltraPulse CO2 laser, Nd.yag, Er.yag, IPL (500nm, 550nm and 650nm).

We also provide therapies using RADIO FREQUENCY.

CO2 LASER
The CO2 laser works by carrying out a controlled "destruction" of the tissue, which provides it with a great versatility in multiple pathologies. The application of CO2 causes the upper layers of the skin to evaporate, leaving some erosions that clear up in a few days. The size of these erosions will depend on the lesion treated.

Indications:
· Lentigo senilis and sunspots
· Common warts, moles and verrucas
· Condylomas
· Seborrheic keratosis
· Milia cysts
· Cheloids and scars
· Rhinophyma
· Tattoos
· Benign tumours (Xanthelasma, fibromas…)
· Precancerous lesions

FACIAL anti-aging

· Wrinkles (peribucal, crow's feet…)
· Cuperosis
· Telangiectasias (small facial veins)
· Ruby dot
· Angiomas

Er.yag:
The Er.yag laser is used to destroy skin spots and small facial wrinkles, and only requires a few sessions. It destroys tissue that will cause superficial erosion which generally clears up in a few days. This does not require hospitalisation.

Nd.yag:
The Nd.yag laser is ideal for the treatment of vascular lesions (telangiectasias, ruby dots, angiomas and small varicose veins on the legs).

The treatment of varicose lesions depends on each patient's type of varicose veins, depending on which we can perform combined therapies with laser and sclerotherapy. Several sessions will be required depending on each case (size, depth etc.) and patient response. It is always advisable to perform a prior study for each case, with vascular tests and analyses. Compression bandaging and cold treatment will be required after each treatment.

Laser V Beam Perfecta de Candela (Dye pulsed595nm)

The latest generation in lasers for all types and locations of vascular lesions:

Telangiectasias
Erythemas
Varicose veins
Petechiae
Lake veins
Port stain wine
Angiomas
Acne scars
Rosacea

As well as benign pigmented lesions, even in the case of Asian patients.

Facial anti-aging: treatment of small facial wrinkles (periorbital, lips).

Laser SMOOTHbeam (Diode 1450nm)

Specially indicated for acne treatments, for both active lesions and surface scars. Also useful for small facial wrinkles.

IPL INTENSE PULSED LIGHT AND RADIO FREQUENCY IPL BIOSTIMULATION AND PHOTOREJUVENATION

This is an IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment that repairs old and sun-damaged skin, improves the signs of early aging, skin spots (moles, ageing), pigmentations, rosacea, telangiectasias.

The treatment also improves acne scars and fine wrinkles. Treatment consists of applying of intense pulsed light. Without damaging it, the light penetrates through the skin and is absorbed by the abnormal pigmentations or dilatations bringing about a natural healing process.

The treatment can be repeated every 3 weeks. We recommend a series of 5 treatments for maximum effect. This can be done at any time of the year. We recommend you not to sunbathe during the treatment, or if you do, to use a high protection cream.

If possible, the area to be treated should not be tanned. We do not recommend the use of peelings or facial treatments with acids in the days prior to your treatment.

IPL: DEPILATION

IPL treatment involves the emission of a very concentrated beam of light which does not harm the surrounding tissue. The pulses of light penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the hair follicles under the surface of the skin. The absorbed light heats the hair and destroys the follicle's ability to regenerate. This does not damage the surrounding tissue.

It is a non-invasive treatment which produces permanent depilation. It allows large areas of the body to be treated and eliminates hundreds of hair follicles in each session. Facial regions such as the chin, cheeks and lips can be treated in minutes. It is the most effective, safe and practically painless way of removing unwanted hair. It can be applied to any part of the body. Unlike other depilatory treatments, it leaves the skin smooth and soft.

The result and the number of sessions will depend upon a number of factors such as the colour, thickness and stage of growth of the hair, skin type (fair or dark) and the area to be treated. No local anaesthetic is required, as the discomfort of the pulsed light going through the skin is minimal. This can be done at any time of the year.

We recommend you not to sunbathe during the treatment, or if you do, to use a high protection cream. If possible, the area to be treated should not be tanned. We do not recommend the use of peelings or facial treatments with acids in the days prior to your treatment.

Although photodepilation is currently the most effective system available, you still require a doctor to evaluate each case and make sure that there is no risk of hypertrichosis or other pathologies that could affect the hair's growth cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is laser depilation painful?
- Depilation is tolerated very well by patients and causes only a minimum of discomfort.

How many sessions will be required?
- The number of sessions will depend on each patient's hair type (colour and location). Likewise, the treatment of small varicose veins and telangiectasias also depends on each patient and on their lifestyle (smoking, sedentary lifestyle, obesity…).

Can lasers cause long-term damage?
- No, lasers do not damage skin either in the long or the short term.

Are there side effects?

- It can cause slight erythema and may occasionally cause the appearance of small blisters that cure after a few days.

Do any precautions have to be taken before and after the sessions?
- You should always tell the person treating you if you are taking medicines and explain what they are (even homeopathy or herbal remedies) before each session. It is advisable to use solar protection after each session and avoid exposure to the sun for approximately six months.

Does facial anti-aging treatment cause lesions that require resting at home?
- No. The treatment is non-ablative, which means that it does not cause any lesions or damage to the skin that require any special treatment, except for solar protection.

Is vascular treatment painful?
- The treatment of vascular lesions can produce slight discomfort depending on the tolerance of each patient. Larger lesions are treated with the aid of a local anaesthetic.

Does the treatment of varicose veins on the legs cause any side effects?
- Only very rarely. You may experience blistering or slight pigmentation of the treated area, which can be limited by avoiding exposure to the sun.

RADIO FREQUENCY

This is a system of facial rejuvenation that does not require surgery, anaesthetic or post-op. Radio frequency waves pass heat to the dermis without affecting the epidermis, activating the synthesis of collagen and elastin, bringing about an improvement in facial wrinkles and flaccidity. The laser thermometer makes it possible to check how much heat is being transferred during each stage of the treatment. The resulting skin is smooth and rejuvenated. There is also a version using blue light to treat acne. 4 sessions are required with an interval of 3 to 4 weeks between each one. The treatment lasts from 30 to 40 minutes. Patients can continue with their normal activity straight away.
