Born in Barcelona on 3 January 1916. He was the son of Doctor Pablo Umbert Corderas, the pioneering Dermatologist and co-founder of the speciality in Catalonia and Pilar de Torrescasana, a member of the Catalan nobility.
He underwent his secondary studies in Barcelona and Madrid and graduated at the Faculty of Medicine in Barcelona with outstanding merit in the class of 1940. He was awarded a doctorate from the University of Madrid, with an outstanding doctoral thesis. He specialised in Dermatology in Madrid. |

He was awarded a Government grant by the Health Ministry. He was head of Dermatology at the Hospital del Niño Dios. He was a co-founder and director of the Institute of Pathology of the Mediterranean Medical Union. He was president of the Catalan section of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology. He was also Vicepresident of Dermatology of the Faculty of Medicine.
He worked for many years to popularise the speciality in national and international journals, and was renowned for his pharmacological studies on detergents with selenium sulphide (topical corticoids), superficial radiation therapy for dermatitis and skin cancer, studies on urticaria, lupus erythematosus, and other topics.
His main field of activity was his work in the San Pedro Claver Hospital and in private consultation. He founded the Umbert Institute of Dermatology located in the Clinica Corachán in Barcelona.
He married Cecilia Millet Genové in 1940 and had 16 children. His sons Pablo and Ignacio have continued this Catalan saga in this speciality.
